Columbia St. Mary's Hospital is pleased to offer “one stop shopping” to its patients at Prospect Medical Commons. As part of the new five-story medical complex, patients can make appointments with primary care and specialty physicians in the same building. And, after they are done with their appointments on the upper floors, they can be simply go down the elevator to the new Whole Foods Market, a leading national organic grocer.
The new facility, located at the corner of Prospect and North Avenues on Milwaukee’s east side, includes more than 50 primary care physicians and specialists as well as state-of-the-art ancillary services such as imaging and laboratory services. The physicians and medical services occupy the second through fifth floors.
“The physicians are together in one facility to provide increased efficiency and more services for their patients,” said Sue Sanicola, Vice President of Physician Services. “It allows us to consolidate and provide greater ancillary services than we would have been able to provide in separate medical office locations.”
The 80,000-square-foot Prospect Medical Commons consolidates physicians from five different office locations on the east side. In addition to greater ancillary services, having primary care physicians in the same building as dermatology, cardiology and other specialists provides easy access for physician consultations on the spot.
Prospect Medical Commons also includes a four-story parking garage. Each floor provides direct access to the building, eliminating the need for patients and families to rely on stairs or elevators to reach their destinations.
However, Sanicola says, the biggest advantage is the technology: an all-digital radiology department and electronic health record.
“Technology enables physicians and staff to take care of patients more efficiently,” Sanicola said. “Using some of the best digital equipment for imaging allows us to take pictures and have them read within hours versus the next day or day after.”
Mammograms, ultrasounds, X-rays, CT scans and other tests use the digital technology. The electronic health record makes available space that medical records would have occupied.
“The system is moving towards a paperless environment,” Sanicola said. Patients also will appreciate the downtown views from the building’s south side and Lake Michigan views from the east side.
“The views create a calming environment which takes some of the stress out of being in a physician’s office,” Sanicola said. “The views also provide some directional support. People know where they are in the building.”
Prospect Medical Commons was the first phase of Columbia St. Mary's plan to set a new national standard for patient care. When completed, the hospital’s east side campus will include an 835,000-square-foot hospital, a new 40,000-square-foot Cancer Center (opened fall 2007), two medical office buildings and new parking structures. It will serve as a national model for safe, efficient and patient-centered care.
Natural and Organic Market's Hospital Location First in the Nation
Imagine when it’s time to buy groceries, walking into a store and immediately smelling freshly brewed coffee, newly baked pastry and just-picked produce – much of it produced locally, all of it natural. That’s what shoppers experience at a Whole Foods Market. Columbia St. Mary’s is pleased to partner with them to introduce the natural food market to the hospital setting – the first of its kind in the nation.
"This is another perfect opportunity to reinforce the importance of healthy lifestyles through great food," said Karol Marciano, Executive Vice President of Business Development at Columbia St. Mary’s. "We look forward to sharing this special experience with our patients and the rest of the community."
Whole Foods Market occupies 50,000 square feet on the first floor of Prospect Medical Commons, a medical office building that will be occupied primarily by Columbia St. Mary’s Community Physicians. The collaboration between the natural grocer and Columbia St. Mary’s complements the hospital’s emphasis on creating a healing environment and advocating healthy lifestyles. Now that the market is open, Columbia St. Mary’s and Whole Foods Market will work to provide community classes to further educate residents and patients about food, cooking and overall healthy living.
"Whole Foods Market is pleased to become part of the Milwaukee community and to have the opportunity to partner with Columbia St. Mary’s," said Patrick Bradley, Whole Foods Market Midwest Regional President. "Just like Columbia St. Mary’s, Whole Foods Market has a passion for people, and we’re eager to demonstrate this passion through our natural, organic and gourmet products, free in-store tasting, events and cooking demonstrations. Our partnership with Columbia St. Mary is really a unique and innovative relationship."
